5 myths about motivation in corporate training

Motivation in corporate training

When training appears in a company, an expectation almost always comes with it: if everything is presented the right way, employees will start learning on their own.

Let's add:

  • a modern format;
  • a bit of gamification;
  • polished delivery.

And the process will take off. In practice — it does not.

This picture shows up in companies constantly: the training exists, the resources exist, but engagement stays at the level of «completed because we had to».

Myth 1. Motivate people and everyone will start learning

If that worked, we would:

  • never postpone tasks;
  • exercise regularly;
  • never abandon what we started.

But motivation is not switched on from the outside. It forms inside a person. A company cannot «turn on motivation», but it can create conditions in which it is easier to start and easier to keep going.

Myth 2. Some people «love learning» and some do not

In practice it is simpler. Learning is a skill. People pick up new things at any age: they change professions, learn new tools, get to grips with AI.

The question is not «predisposition», but whether there is:

  • a clear goal;
  • regularity;
  • a decent environment for learning.

Myth 3. New formats motivate people by themselves

Webinars are not landing → let's do microlearning. Courses are not working → let's add gamification. This can attract attention.

Curiosity ≠ engagement. If an employee does not understand why they need this at work — no format will save it.

Myth 4. Motivation is a permanent state

There is an expectation: if an employee is motivated, they will learn consistently.

But motivation:

  • grows;
  • drops;
  • disappears.

And that is normal. So training must account for it: not only «spark it at the start», but sustain the process along the way.

Myth 5. The more interesting and «beautiful», the better people learn

Good design and delivery matter. But that is not what decides it. Engagement comes from meaning, not from styling.

If an employee understands why this matters and where they will apply it — they will learn even without «wow effects». If not — even the most beautiful course will not help.

What it comes down to

Motivation is not a tool you can «switch on». It is a process. And in corporate training the task is not to motivate everyone, but to:

  • make the training clear;
  • connect it to real work;
  • create conditions where it is easier to start and continue.

Why this matters now

With the arrival of AI, learning has become continuous rather than a one-off. Skills refresh faster. Tools change. And a company that does not build a process ends up with a growing gap between people.

Employees do not need to be «forced to learn». But hoping they will do it consistently on their own does not work either.

In the next articles we'll look at how companies build training in practice: what actually works and what stays on paper.
